Many of you might think that it’s such a weird name for a hair disease but as I was talking about it before in my previous article that there are many different kind of hair fall diseases that come from many factors. For the patchy hair loss I am going to talk about, they look like coin-sized patches which is a disease that is found in approximately 1.7% of the population and it is most common in the age of 15-30 years.

The exact cause of the disease is still unknown but it is believed to be caused by a malfunction of the Autoimmune system and it is often found to be associated with other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, etc.

If examining areas with patches of hair loss, the skin colour may be normal or may appear to be pale pink. If you try to gently swipe the hair in that area, hair may easily fall into the hands. The root area of the hair is slimmer than the tip of the hair, called Exclamation Mark Hair Or it is an Exclamation point!

Patients with this disease may have one or multiple patches of hair loss. Some people may have several patches altogether that they look like they have lost their hair the entire head, or it may occur in any areas that have hairs, such as eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair.

For anyone suffering from this disease, do not panic. If it’s not a lot, it will usually heal on its own. However, the treatment will stimulate hair regrowth. In general, we usually treat it by applying medical lotion with the injections into the hair loss area. Then hair will start to regrow again at about 1-1.5 months after the treatment.
